hi,
boinc manager doesn\'t follow the preferences i got :(
i read that topic below and i installed v5.8.15. it doesn\'t work, though.
i get 100% of cpu usage, but i\'d like to use not more than 40%.
i tried changing the config using this website, then i checked out boinc manager and, on the menu bar, if i choose \"activity>run based on preferences\" and \"activity>network activity based on preferences\"... update button does nothing.

what can i do?
thanks!

Have you tried the \'preferences\' screen on the \'simple view\'? Note that if you use the simple view preferences it\'ll prevent the same setting working from the website.

The CPU limit setting doesn\'t work exactly as you might think. Projects won\'t run at a constant 40% load. They will run at 100% for 40 seconds and not at all for a minute (the actual durations might vary a bit, but that\'s what it\'ll average out as).

If you check this in Task Manager, then that is correct. The CPU cycles that CPDN will fetch will be 100%. This is because BOINC, as a multi-platform program, cannot use the Windows CPU timing API that other programs like Threadmaster/BES use. You won\'t see that the application uses 40% of the CPU, it\'ll take 100%.

What BOINC will do though is pause the crunching a couple of seconds every 10 seconds. On 40% this will be done this way: 1 second run, 1 second idle, 1 second run, 2 seconds idle, 1 second run, etc.

You won\'t see a 1 second/2 second pause in Task Manager. Too quick.
But check your CPU temperature with a monitoring program and you\'ll see that the CPU temp goes down.

Now what doesn\'t work at all? BOINC? Does it not crunch? Check your messages in BOINC Manager\'s Messages tab. If you see \"Suspending Computation - User is active\", then you\'ve got your preferences set to only crunch when the computer is idle.

My 100% usage is different - settings are for BOINC to not run when user is active. On two of my systems, this is honored. On the third, BOINC continues running even when a user is active. They all use the same setting, i.e. \'HOME\'.

What might be different with the 3rd computer?

Make sure BOINC is set to Run based on preferences.

Why would two of the three honor the preference setting and not the third?

You can set specific activities for all 3 through Boinc Manager.

So open Boinc Manager on that third machine, Activity menu. Check if it is set to Run based on preferences. You can set all machines individually to other options through their own Boinc Managers (the GUI). And if one is set to run always, it will not abide any changes you make to the preferences on the website.

Check if it is set to Run based on preferences.

THAT WAS IT! Thanks.

Message 28362 - Posted: 2 May 2007, 5:06:21 UTC

My problem seems to be related to this, but not the same. I have several computers all running Boinc 5.8.16.
All of them have Climate Prediction and at least one other application, usually Seti.
I have my \'global\' preferences set to 100 for each task except for Climate Prediction is set to 150.
It appears that Climate Prediction is hogging all the Boinc processing time. It doesn\'t interfere with my use of the computer, but none of the other tasks seem to get serviced fairly, even when missing their reporting deadlines. They also do not request new work.
If I temporarily suspend Climate Prediction, then other tasks run and fairly share the time. They will request new work, etc.
I do know about what happens when the system is over-committed, but that is not happening - at least from the messages list.

Suggestions?

Your computers are hidden, so we can\'t get an idea of their speed or look at the deadlines of your models, so you\'ll need to supply this information:

* Are you PCs single core / hyperthreaded / dual core / quad core / ... ?
& How long are the PCs turned on each day and able to run Boinc?
* How many projects are you actively connected to on each system, and how many climate models are you running on each?
* What is each ones deadline?
* What s/ts are you getting from each model (failing that, how many CPU hours is it per trickle)?
* What is the climate project\'s resource share compared to the total of the other projects allowed work on each PC? (i.e., what is its %).

Note that 5.8.x will allow other projects to get work even if there is a task under deadline pressure, provided that it\'s a hyperthreaded or multicore system. I don\'t think it displays anything about EDF etc (because it has changed the way projects are scheduled when under pressure).
I'm a volunteer and my views are my own.
