I have updated the download link here for the new BOINC version for Linux & Windows. Note that we do not have Mac yet but we hope to have a Mac Intel OS X version up within a month (contact tolu at atm dot ox dot ac dot uk to join the Mac Intel beta test).

Version 5.8.8 should be safe to upgrade to if you are still using the original BBC/CCE/BOINC software from last February (I believe it renames the directory to \"BOINC\" so that this and future upgrades are correct).

Some of the new features (from the BOINC website):

* The BOINC Manager offers two different interfaces: \'Simple\' (small, graphical, skinnable) and \'Advanced\' (maximum information). The Simple GUI allows local editing of preferences. You can switch back and forth between Simple and Advanced.
* CPU throttling: you can reduce CPU heat by limiting the fraction of time that BOINC computes.
* Improved scheduling policies avoid missing job deadlines even on a slow computer with lots of projects.
* You can limit the amount of memory used by BOINC; this lets you compute all the time without losing performance.
* Mac OS X version runs applications in an unpriviledged account, increasing security.
* Snooze button (in the system tray icon) lets you stop computing for one hour.

We recommend that all BOINC users upgrade to 5.8.

Hello Carl,

Are there any advantages in the way of computing speed for version 5.8.8?

I have recently attached to the CPDN side, and am now running version 5.4.11.

The BOINC software does not do any computing on it\'s own. It is just the manager and host to the other softwares that do the computing. So there should be no speed change what so ever.

It does give the teams better information about your processor, which in turn may lead to better speed applications, as they can then decipher what extensions your processor can handle, and give you a better optimized application (at a future date).

What I was refering to, is the fact that I have seen some \"optimsed\" BOINC managers around, for instance when crunching for SETI.

They seem to give an increase in s/TS.

But apart from that, I would like to know if I can change to this new BOINC manager without crashing my model.

No problem. As you have 5.4.11, simply stop the Model and boinc and make a backup. Install 5.8.8 over 5.4.11 and restart.

Just an FYI for those with service installs...the install would not work if the service was stopped, but ran flawlessly when left running.

I always stop the service before install. How are you stopping it? I open a command prompt and type in net stop boinc. Install over as a service again and it takes off no issues.

Please note that a few details of Carl\'s above announcement have been edited and expanded. It now reads:

The Linux version of boinc 5.8.8 is still being tested and may not run stably.

I had been stopping it using the administrative tools in control panel (Win XP Pro), but this didn\'t work with the 5.8.8 upgrade as the install hung. I always have gone through my upgrades doing the \'point and click\' method because I need my office machine to run a 3 minute delay (then blanked screen in 3 minute) password protected screensaver due to secure data issues on the machine. To do that with the service install, one has to change the log on to local systems account and allow the service to interact with the desktop. Having done the service install upgrade now to four boxes, it appears that the installer has no problem shutting down and restarting the service without manual intervention (3 boxes on Win XP Pro, 1 on Win2k Pro).

I have upgraded to 5.8.8, but now BOINC can not connect ot the server anymore.

I have entered my IP adress, username qand password under the advanced/options tab (as HTTP proxy), nut this still does not work.

What to do next?

The new version is very strict about the url.
It must NOT have www in it.

If it\'s not this, please copy the messages from the Messages tab and paste them here.

The problem seems to be that I can not set a standard connection. I was playing around with the proxy settings, but I am not connected to the internet via a proxy server.

How do I set a standard connection in the advanced/options/connections menue?

In the system tray, does boinc indicate \'connected to localhost\'? If not, a re-boot often \"fixes\" it. You might also try, top line in Manager, Advanced/Select Computer and hit Enter with both windows blank.

I am connected to the localhost. If I allow network activity, I now get the following message as well:

BOINC can\'t connect to the outside world. Check your firewall settings.

Diasabled the firewall and manually updated the project. This worked fine, although the messages are different.

The problems seems to be on my side, and not ralted to BOINC. I will run a spyware and virus scan and see where that takes me. Thanks so far....

Whoa!!! Les said \"check your firewall settings\". That doesn\'t mean turn it off :-)

You really SHOULD NOT run with your firewall disabled. Suggest you enable the firewall IMMEDIATELY and then adjust the firewall settings. Your problem is the firewall won\'t allow your new Boinc 5.8.8 to talk to the outside world. You need to tell your firewall to trust 5.8.8 and allow 5.8.8 access to the Internet. Yeah, it works if you disable the firewall but then all the creepy nasty dudes break into your computer.

Norton has this nice button that allows me to turn off the firewall for five minutes, enough to do the update.

The problem is firewall-related though, Norton can not even get through it\'s own firewall to check for updates! But I will sort this out..

Installed Ver 5 .8.8 on 7th Feb Initially ran for a bit then failed. In the last couple of days had two more tasks Started new job 24 hours ago and it has been running constantly. Computing time now shows it has been running 3 hours, yet seconds and minutes seem ok. Have just repaired 5.8.8 and unticked sync on internet time. Any ideas
