Richard, I have been puzzled by this as well and have been watching the logs on a couple of my machines. My theory is that the minimum time slice is "1 hour" . I have my preferences set to 100 Units CPDN and 50 units SETI. This works out to 2/3 processing time for CPDN and 1/3 processing time for Seti.

What I am seeing in the logs and in task manager CPU time summary is two 1 hour time slices assigned to CPDN for every one 1 hour time slice assigned to Seti.

My guess is that if you set your preference to CPDN 1 and SETI 100 then for every 101 hours of operation CPDN will get a single 1 hour timeslice and SETI will get 100.

it will make differnce only after u update your boinc project stats
i mean right click at every project and update. in this way, your boinc will connect to project servers and and will get your new prefferenses
if it not connect to server, there is no chanches at your local computer

Also realize that BOINC needs to balance out your resource debt before you will see a true 50/50 split.

This could take a couple weeks.

> Thank Heffed, but I am not interested in a 50%/50% split (which it presently
> is).

When I had this problem, it turned out that I had separate preferences set for home. I'd overlooked them because I failed to scroll down the page. It's embarrassingly easy to make a simple mistake under BOINC!

> Thank Heffed, but I am not interested in a 50%/50% split (which it presently

Same principle. I just used 50/50 as an example.

Until your resource debt is balanced, you will not see the resource share operating the way it should.

>
4.05 does not handle dual processors very wel for resource sharing. What I have seen is that the project with the resource share over 50% will get one CPU, and the others will share one CPU.

The balancing out over a couple of weeks was what happened under 3.x, but 4.x should start balancing almost immediately. I am a bit surprised that BOINC is not handling your case closer to correctly.

A couple of questons: What are the resource shares for all of the projects that you are attached to (not just the ones that are downloaded). This has an effect on how many WUs are downloaded from each project at one time. Have you looked in the client_state.xml file to see what the debt is doing for each of the projects? Have you looked to see shat the client believes the shares are? I can't remember which file this is in, but it is either in the client_state.xml, or the account_*.xml files.

Message 3280 - Posted: 7 Sep 2004, 15:27:03 UTC

Hi all,

I wonder if in future versions of BOINC it will be possible to divide time by giving certain projects priority?
What I mean is this: currently I'm a member of SETI and of ClimatePrediction, but SETI does not always have plenty work for me. So I would like to have BOINC crunching SETI at 100% of the time unless it runs out of work and then continue with other projects, based on priority levels given.

Am I alone with this idea, or are there more people who would prefer this method?

That would be exactly what I was hoping to use the resource sharing for when I gave S@H 100% and CP 0%, but it didn't work. It would be great if something as simple as priority flags existed.

I have the exac same problem.
My resources is set to 95.24% for CPDN and 4.76% for Seti (This is shown under the Projects Tab)

And I still get the time-shares like this:

@Soni
When first starting a new version BOINC will sometimes switch rapidly between the various projects. After a few hours it should settle down to using hour long chunks. This can also happen when you reset or attach projects.

@John Keck

Yes I do know this, but this is after 2 weeks running (24/7), where I had run seti@home alone a few weeks (2-4) before.
So if anything, it should give priority to CPDN, so it could catch up.

I have the same problem @ home on my home machine.
My linux machine did the same, so there I detached the S@H project.

Feature request: show ressource-dept when vieuwing the project tab in de gui client (and an option to reset it from teh right-cliclk menu) per project.

I was wondering too ewhy seti keeps running 50% of the timne instead of CP all the time. Also noticed that every time I exit an restart boinc, it first does an hour of seti, then an hour of cp, then 1 hour seti again. ( from the preferences, sety only gets arround 5% and CP nearly 70% (rest for pirates and predictor, but they have no work at the moment)

I found out thgat in the client_stat.xml there was a huge value for the seti-project dept, an 0.0 for all other projects.
Don't know how that started, but I edited this to 0.0 for seti, and now wait and see how it develops.

ps. I also upgraded boinc from 4.05 to 4.09, today.
