Hello,

I read somewhere here that for the CP project, one should set the preference \"Leave applications in memory while preempted?\" to Yes. I have done this, but when I click update preferences, it is back to No. I cannot get it to change to Yes. I can set these BOINC general preferences from another project (eg. SETI or Einstein) to yes, but when I look at them from here, it is no. When I open them for edit, the Yes button is selected, when I close and update, it is back to No. Hitting Update (for CP project) from the BOINC manager and waiting overnight also did not change anything.

I\'m using BOINC 5.2.13 with Windows XP SP2. Sorry if I missed this, but I don\'t think I saw this problem listed anywhere. Thanks.

Hi, Bob, welcome to the Boards and CPDN.

I\'m groping in the dark on this one. Do you set separate Prefs for Home (or Work or School)? Also, there is a section for CPDN-specific Prefs and it includes a line to specify which General Prefs to use. (For example, mine is set to \"Home\", so \"Separate Prefs for Home\" is the only place I have to make a change if I want to do something different, like switch from 2 to 1 CPU per machine.) Is there a conflict among these settings?

Hope that helps.

Hi astroWX,

thanks, no,I don\'t have any separate prefs for home/work/school. What I suspect now is that the display on the web page showing the preferences is simply wrong, as when I edit them, this pref is set to yes; also, CP\'s messages on BOINC say \"Pausing result sulphur_gmcp... (left in memory)\", so it appears to be working as it\'s supposed to I think.

Hi, again, Bob,

It seems to be as you suggest. (One for the boinc developers, I think.) Nicely done.

To verify that all is well, if you want the satisfaction of confirming your point, if you are comfortable looking into boinc files, there is one in the boinc directory/folder called global_prefs.xml. If \"Leave applications in memory...\" is set to \"Yes\", there will be an entry thus in the big middle of the file: {leave_apps_in_memory/}.

Edit: I forgot that greater-than/less-than symbol pairs don\'t do well on this Board.

I became a participant yesterday and when I started the pc today the cpu-time and progress were back where it was when I turned off the pc yesterday. According to these numbers I lost the last 40 minutes of work.

-In the general preferences, the \"Leave applications in memory while suspended?\"
is set to yes.
-It is a workstation that is only at home, no prefs for home/work/and so on is set
-When I turned off th pc yesterday, I rightclicked the Boinc-icon down to the left and choosed exit before I turned the pc off.

Sometimes I hear the harddisk work quite intensive. On the disk tab in boinc manager the size og climateprediction.net was 402 meg but changed to 417 meg, and then went back to 402 meg. Was this a \"saving to disk\" prosess? Is it something I can do to prevent so much work go down the drain?

Thank you

Yes. Run the computer for longer. To be exact, until the model reaches a \'checkpoint\' when the data gets saved. Otherwise, the only data available to start again the next time, is the starting point.

To find the checkpoint, use Show graphics in the Tasks tab. Press the Z key to remove the overlay, then press 8. This will show you a count down timer. When it reaches zero, it\'s reached a checkpoint. Wait a few seconds until it\'s back up to 400 and something, and THEN you can Suspend the model and Exit. (I forget the exact \'high\' number.)

Thank you, that worked perfect.
By the way, the checkpoint starts at 432
