Message 12894 - Posted: 26 May 2005, 17:11:32 UTC

I'm running BIONIC with three projects attached; climateprediction.net, seti@home, and Einstein@home. Several weeks ago I started getting errors from the climatepredction.net that I didn't have enough disk space allocated to run a project.

I have been able to run the climateprediction.net workload in the past with no problem. I'm not sure why I'm suddenly having this problem.

BIONIC is configured to used 5GB of disk space and from what I've read even if that space were divided evenly between all three projects, it should be sufficient for climateprediction.net to run.

Any one have any idea?

You may want to look at
CP data retention

2 complete models may leave behind 330MB each. I'd still expect there to be enough space but you may want to move those 660MB outside the BOINC folder.

How to check disk usage for CPDN: see here.

I tried looking at that with no luck. Currently my CP directory is about 23 MB.

I have a 15 GB disk, with about 5 GB free.

I have BIONIC set to use no more then 5 GBs, to leave at least .5 GBs, and to use no more the 50% of the total disk space. I've tried playing with these setting to no avail. I still get the error message that there's not enough space.

The other projects will be using space, as will programs / data in the BOINC root folder, so you will need to know the TOTAL space used.

And you may want to try a bit less than 5G, as the figures may not be exact. e.g. 'Use no more than' 4.5G
I think that '50% of total space' in your case is 2.5G.

Does using
Use no more than 3 GB
Leave at least 1 GB
Use no more than 100% of total space

work?

No it didn't :-(

I looked at the disk tab in my BIONIC window and under the settings I outlined perviously, it looks like the "BOINIC free space" is at 145.80 MB. and everything else is talking 20 MBs or less. All in all I think that despite my settings BIONIC seems to think it only has less then 200 MB. Not idea why.

The complete break down is as follows (acording to the disk tab in my BIONIC program):

BOINC software 2.86 MB
BOINC free space 146.68 MB
seti@home 10.64 MB
climateprediction.net 23.67 MB
Einstein@Home 24.15 MB

my settings are:

Use no more then 5 GB
Leave at least 0 GB free
and use no more then 50 % of the Total disk space

My local disk currently has 5.23 GB free

I have no idea either so I'll try a few questions, (sorry if they are a bit stupid):
Are you updating general preferences via CP pages or by another projects pages?
Are you updating sufficient times for a) the preferences to get to your computer and b) to attempt a download?
Are you seeing the message 'General preferences have been updated'?
After seeing such a message is there any change in the 145.8MB BOINC free space?

I'm so confused by this situation that I'm willing to try anything :-)

Via the seti@home page.

> Are you updating sufficient times for a) the preferences to get to your
> computer and b) to attempt a download?

Yes... the changes are downloaded and applied

> Are you seeing the message 'General preferences have been updated'?

Yup

> After seeing such a message is there any change in the 145.8MB BOINC free
> space?

Yeah, it changes accordingly to the changes I've made. As best as I can reason, the problem seems to be that despite me telling BOINC to use 5 GB it's think it should only be using about 200 MB. What's even more confusing is that in the disk tab on the left hand side, BIONIC sees the 5 GB of free space but again only uses about 200 MB.

I am afraid I really haven't got a clue now.

You could try changing to 3GB, 1GB, 100% from your account here, Update climateprediction to get the preferences then update again to see if you download a model. If not, what figures do you get on left graph page? How do these figures change if you try 4GB, 1GB, 100%?

>

> climateprediction.net 23.67 MB
> Einstein@Home 24.15 MB

That's saying that you've only got 146.68MB available for BOINC, with a total BOINC allocation of 208MB. CPDN needs 700MB for a complete model.

> my settings are:
>
> Use no more then 5 GB
> Leave at least 0 GB free
> and use no more then 50 % of the Total disk space

I'm pretty sure the use no more than 50% actually refers to the free space left on the disk + the space already used by BOINC, not to the total disk space. But even then with 5GB free I'd expect your BOINC free space to be around 2.4GB

Have you requested a project update in your BOINC client since changing your settings and checked that they've been correctly propogated to S@H and E@H?

The other thing to be aware of is that your relative resource share applies to disk space as well as CPU time. So you need to make sure your CPDN relative share is high enough to allow a WU to be downloaded (a third would be fine, but if you currently have it lower you can drop it back down after a WU has been downloaded).

I've also played with the 50% number by both raising it to 90% and lowering it almost zero, this didn't help either.

I have done the update and the chanages did get pushed through

I'll try altering the share allocation to see if it's the CPU.

Thanks for the advice.

Changed the allocation so that CPDN has 97 % of all the resources. Same problem, didn't help.

I seemed to have fixed the problem. I Up-graded my BOINC software to the latest recommended version and now I'm able to run CPDN. Strangely enought this worked and the difference between the latest version and the the one I was running was not that great.
