Hi everyone

I do agree with all the points raised in favour of the php forum by Honza, Andrew and Arnaud. The concensus seems to be that cpdn needs more forum facilities than other boinc projects because cpdn is more complex to run.

Ingleside's point about how it was possible to lose the VIEW NEW POSTS on php is valid. You do lose the list of new posts if you go out of the forum and reenter, and my machine doesn't keep the list in the history file. But if you have a long list to check after you've been away, you can save the page, just in case, before you do anything with it.

Certainly, the combination of both boinc and php facilities offers the best of possible worlds.

I would like to add that the PM facility did allow a few problems to be solved OFF the forum. It enabled me to exchange news with a few group members who rarely or never posted on the board.

As Hannah says, we are just going to have to be really patient, hoping that all is not lost and they can find a solution. If they can, it will have been worth waiting for.

Honza, Arnaud, Les Bayliss, Beezlebub.
OK Im back.
Les, I will keep going wit this project, not sure about "error 5" but will see.
First, I want to ThankYou all for your advises. I am pretty sure hmm, even very sure that, it was my fault.I am lazy. I run all the Arnaud`s tests.
memtest86-ok, no problems
superPi-ok no problems
Prime95-yes, problem. run along with Motherboard Monitor Program:
Temperature 75C , computer freezes after 3 min of runing test.
I looked inside my box and.... . 3 months ago i burned power suply while doing
several operations on my comp. I instald second taken from other computer and left
side panel not instaled. Better ventilation but, it gets dusty several times faster. When i bent my neck and looked inside WOW... . Disconected, removed all fans for cleaning-vacuuming, heatsink coverd in 3/4 (area under fan), vacuumed all parts-hardware.
I instaled new power suply, 600W, droped everything back into the box, switched power ON and run Prime95 test again for 8 hours. After that time - no errors, no warnings. Temperature between 58C-61C. It`s done, well done. Today morning I restarted Boinc and will keep it going. Thanks again,
ZippO

WOW! 600watts! That ought to keep it happy!

Glad you got things fixed, ZippO. I've found over the years with computers, that hard problems often have
simple answers, but they can take a looooong time to figure out.

I usually list the following as causes for CPDN crashing:
Over heating
Over clocking
A power supply that can't provide stable voltages under full processor load.

I think I'll have to add:
Fans and heatsinks covered with dust.

Well to combine the two topics in one...
Mine is filthy / dusty inside and I <i>had</i> intended to consult UK_Nicks hardware sticky on the phpBB board, full of useful step by step instructions designed for idiots like me, on how to clean........

Hi,

Well, I can now you give you an update on where we are with the phpBB.

Everyone here is really keen to get it back up, somewhere, somehow, *but* it's going to have to be hosted at one of the project's organisations: either here in Oxford, or at RAL.

It seems that the bugs in phpBB have been fixed, so as soon as we sort out a new machine and hosting, we'll import the database from the old forum and get it up and running for everyone to use on the new machine.

As you can imagine, this may take us a little while, and I can't guarantee you a date, so please, please be patient with us.

In summary, the phpBB forum *will* be back soon!

Thanks,
Hannah

Great news, we appreciate how much effort doing such "simple things" really takes. Thanks Hannah.

canwick,
As the song says, you're not the first.
"I talk to the trees...."

And as the Goons continued:
"That's why they put me away"

Short tv news item this morning from London; England is having it's worst winter weather for years.
It's hot and humid here in Sydney. Wish I was somewhere else.

I'm willing to help every way possible to speed-up the "be back soon", including administration of phpBB and phpMyAdmin which i have learned administrating Czech phpBB forum.

I found a translation tool but it came up with:

From all the way at length to use abusive language Hannah , patience our? In which bono? O transitory morium!

Before using the tool I could guess the translation of 'patientia nostra', so I don't think the tool helped really. I don't know how 'abusive' the post was meant to be; it might only be saying 'How far are you going to test our patience, Hannah? I am no wiser on the rest.

That should show how poor my language skills are.

<b>Ad rem!</b>

We are enjoying the <b>ad hoc, ad lib</b> Latin lesson.

I am writing this <b>inter nos et inter pares, in tempore opportune, currente calamo, de proprio motu, et ex tempore</b>.

But do we expect Hannah and the team to produce a <b>deum ex machina</b>? This would be the <b>reductio ad absurdam</b> of the whole exercise.

So, Hannah <b>et alia</b>, <b>nil desperandum! Ad augusta per angusta! Festina lente!</b> Although <b>hora fugit</b>, phpbb has not existed <b>in saecula saeculorum</b> and we can't expect its return <b>hic et nunc</b> although we do hope <b>(horribile dictu!)</b> for something <b>hoc anno</b>, or maybe even before the Ides of March.

<b>Dum spiro, spero.</b> So now for some <b>aqua pura cum aqua vita</b> because <b>bonum vinum laetificat cor hominis mulierisque</b>.

Hannah ea,
Thanks for your reply a few weeks ago. This did not yet give any indication on timing. I can imagine that a certain amount of red tape and lack of resources are involved. But are we talking weeks, months?? Can you or any of your colleagues give us an update?
Thanks

Hi all,

Great news! The phpBB board should be back up by the end of the week!

Sylvia has spoken to Open University, where they were being hosted before the hacking problems, and they are now happy to put the board back up again. The new release of phpBB fixes the problems with the older version, so they feel that it is now safe to put the board online.

We'll keep you all posted as things happen - you'll be the first to know when it's up!

Thanks again for your patience,

Hannah
