I\'m nearing the end of a run on Boinc, after which i\'m going to down this machine, and then Linux it. I\'m actually WAITING for the CPDN work unit to finish before I re-format, re-build and re-attch.
BUT
Last night some time, even though I\'d told CPDN (sorry, BOINC) to not use the network (just get on with the work damned machine, leave me to decide how you communicate and when you do it!) the bloody thing went and downloaded a new work unit \" I\'ve only got a day or so of work left I\'m going to get more work, regardless of what my lord and master tells me to do (or not do). \"
Well, the program is now switched off and not doing anything until I find out how (short of yanking the network cable, which isn\'t going to happen because it\'s my file server) to stop the damned thing from disobeying my instructions.
I\'ve also got another work unit in my bin, which I need to delete. But there\'s no options.
I\'m not going to wait another couple of months to take this machine down again.

Is it possible to go back from BOINC to using CPDN classic? That seemed better behaved (from the little experience I had with it.

Hi Aidan,

BOINC shouldn't have downloaded new work if you suspended the network using the GUI interface or something like Boincview. But the suspended state would have been lost if BOINC was restarted (it isn't a persistent setting).

It is possible to prevent BOINC from downloading new work by playing around with your preference settings. For CPDN the best way is to reduce the disk space parameters so that BOINC calculates that it doesn't have the 700MB available that a new run would require.

The best way to decommission your Windows client cleanly would be to let your current job finish and upload it's result and then detach from the project. That way all the workunits you've downloaded will be invalidated on the server side and rescheduled.

There's nothing stopping you from going back to CPDN classic if you want to, but only the BOINC version will run under Linux.
